Sound Source Localization
What is it about?
Sound Source Localization is a technique to localize and visualize sound at the source.
Using a microphone array this is done with a one-shot measurement
Such tools accelerate troubleshooting and confirms that you work on the right problem.

Sound Source Localization
- Technique to localize and visualize sound at the source
- With a one-shot measurement using an array of microphones
- Accelerates troubleshooting and confirms that you work on the right problem
Typical applications:
- Acoustic transparency
- Locating noise phenomena
- Comparing variants of components
- Quantification and ranking of source contribution
Introducing LMS Sound Camera
The Digital Microphone Array for Sound Source Localization
LMS Sound Camera is the new, digital microphone array, used for sound source localization.
It comes with a dedicated standalone software for fast real-time source localizion & on-the-spot analysis.

LMS Sound Camera
Fast & Versatile Sound Source Localization solution
using digital microphone array with integrated electronics
LMS Sound Camera is a fast and versatile tool for sound source localization.
The LMS Sound Camera product addresses mainly 2 types of users:
- Those that are looking to accelerate their acoustic troubleshooting.
- And those that are seeking to increase their engineering insight
The LMS Sound Camera Digital Array is a modular array with digital microphones and all electronics integrated.
It is a 3-in-1 array that can be extended in size to support a very wide applications range.
It can be used with its dedicated standalone software for real-time source locatization.
It can also be used directly by LMS Test.Lab, without using a front-end. This is especially useful when more data channels have to be measured in parallel, or when more advanced source localization analyses are required.
LMS Sound Camera Digital Array
Modular array with 3 different sizes
To summarize the 3 different sizes:
The center array is typically used in a handheld mode, although it can also be put on a tripod. Due to its size is not suited for low frequencies, but on the other hand it is easy to handle in locations where there is not so much space.
When the short arms are added we get an all-round array. It can be used from farfield and nearfield. It has a high dynamic range over the full frequency range.
When fitted with the long arms, the diameter of array increases to 1.5m, which results in a very good spatial resolution down to 200Hz.
Lower frequency results can be further improved in post-processing by advanced methods such as iNAH.
The dynamic range in this table is specified as a simulated result. Experience shows that in real-life experiments this is typically 1 to 2dB lower.

Designed to cover wide frequency range

On the microphones:
- The microphones are digital microphones, so-called MEMS.
- They are comparable to classical array microphones. Togther with the built-in signal conditioning they have a flat frequency response.
- They are not intended to be class-1 measurement microphones. But with respect to phase match they are excellent for sound source localization
- They have a very low noise floor, and an overload point of 120dB peak
